The current plans for the next season of growing.

Some of last seasons plans did not even get off the ground. I did not do any of the carrots or beans. And I attempted to grow the globe artichokes but they died after they were transplanted.

This season I am taking it easy and growing only stuff I have previously grown. Apart from the garlic, but that does not get harvested until November anyway. I also plan on growing a bunhc of the mexican sour gherkin along the front fence.

Most of the seed has been sown in trays for these plans. The lettuces and spinach are already in seedling stage and will be planted out in the next day or so.

I really want to try my hand at growing artichoke. I love the look of the plant, and I love eating the globe. Being they need at least 2 meter spacing I will attempt to grow three plants (three whole plants omg!) in the last bed of my patch. As they grow so high they will not shade any other bed in the morning sunlight and will be well enough out of the way for maneuvering between beds.

As they take a while to grow, I will make as much use of the space as I can trying to get some herbs up and running in the richness of my garden beds (and out of the way of trampling puppy paws). I realise it is a commitment as I will need two years to really grow them to get a decent crop, so I am giving over a bed for a substantial amount of time. I am really hoping it will be worth it.

Dad brought down a fantastic magazine for me. Its a basic ‘how to’ gardening guide put out by the organic gardening magazine. In it there was a sowing and seedling season for a range of vegetables and herbs. Using this I will also be growing some carrots and beans in one of my current beds only occupied by basil.

Yet again the planning is part of the experiment to see what I can and cannot grow and if the yield is worth it.

Plans for the planting in Autumn. I am about to pull out my tomatoes, and the two end beds are now planted completely. I plan on planting my garlic when March hits officially and having a whole bed of green manure. I don’t know how much I will get done before I go away in the middle of March, but maybe a bit.

I had to go for a blood test today. The annoying kind where you have to eat a special diet for 3 days then fast the night before, then get stuck 3 times over 2 hours.. you know the bad annoying kind. When I was finally free, I walked outside to call the hubby as we were going to go for breakfast. I then noticed that a few doors down from the blood place the discount store was having a 40% off closing down sale. So I called the hubs (who I woke who had gone back to sleep, and told him id be dropping in there to check stuff out). I went in with my eye on a set of LED white lights that I want to hang outside under our deck over the spa. Picked up two boxes of 160 stringed lights for $35.94. I then started looking around for anything else that might be worthwhile and found a garden section. I picked up a ‘mini greenhouse’ for $23.97. That’s right under $25 bucks. I was thrilled.

So after we went and had our breakfast, I came home and assembled this beauty. Super easy to assemble. I put it in the spot where I have been growing my seedlings in trays on a small table. And it went to work. It was super sunny today, but also really chilly due to a super cold wind. You can see the good that it was doing already keeping those seedlings nice and snug.

Here is a shot with the ‘door’ rolled up. The top tier I have my lettuce seedlings, some tomatoes and some newly planted tomatoes, chillies and eggplant. The second tier down I have my spinach and capsicum seedling tray and some jiffy pots that have yet to turn into seedlings. I am starting to think they won’t as it has been a few weeks now.

Close up of the top tier.

Close up of the new seedling trays and tomato seedlings (in super awesome vegan butter containers!).

A closer look at the top and middle tier.

My super awesome spinach seedlings. They are getting planted tomorrow when I finish building their climbing frame. I have much hope of those, much much hope (and many recipes!).
